Thrifting in Graz

While thrifting may have a reputation for clothes, there are other practical things you can thrift: plates/bowls, German and/or English books for any age, dvds, etc. And, of course, clothes! This includes traditional tracht and dirndl too! These thrift stores really helped me find some things I needed when I first arrived.

For example, I thrifted a two-plate, two-bowl set for 2 euros total. You could also go to a store like Tedi in Graz (an Austrian Dollar store), but there are lots of things you can get second hand. Additionally, I found my winter jacket at the Carla on Merangasse, because I didn’t bring one with me, it was perfect. I even found a completely unused German B1/2 textbook that I needed for a class at the Carla on Zinzendorfgasse and paid 1-2EUR for it (it normally cost 25 EUR)!

Not to mention I found all my traditional clothing second hand, still beautiful and in great condition, but more student friendly in terms of budget. Of course, I also just found some fun finds for myself at the thrift stores and had a blast finding what Graz’s second hand fashion had to offer! I even found a new friend this year while meandering around niki secondhand thrift store.

Here are some of my frequent haunts:

Near Merangasse: Carla on Merangasse, niki secondhand (near Uni Graz)

Near the Kunsthaus: Humana, Carla on Annenstraße

Near Hauptplatz: Humana

Near Uni Graz: Carla on Zinzendorfgasse

Near Jakomini: Carla on Jakoministraße

Other thrifting opportunities: Be Thrifty’s HerbstMesse Pick n’ Weigh event, Sep

While I was finding pictures for this blurb I also found this website, Nachhaltig, which seems to have an extensive looking database of the thrift stores in Graz and even offers a compressive list of all the Carla locations with address (under the Carla article, also linked next to the Carla image). So if you’re into the scene and want to see more I’d check it out!
